This collection of narratives and anecdotes has been assembled to provide scholars and students of the New Testament with a handy resource in consulting comparative narrative material often referred to but seldom given in extenso. Rather than give only those texts which are most frequently alleged, I have made a wide selection so that the reader may experience for him/herself the literary atmosphere which produced the texts. The material has been restricted to that which is geographically and chronologically closest to the NT milieu.
The four indices provide various possibilities for consultation. The first index gives a list of subjects contained in the stories or treated in the Introduction. The second lists NT texts that are referred to in one or another story. Another index, by author and work, usually giving a date for the author, allows for easy access to literature referred to in the commentaries, etc. A fourth index gives the proper names appearing in the stories.
The accent has been placed on short narrative material comparable to the pericopes in the Synoptics and Acts and, where they exist, to those in the Fourth Gospel. Extension of the collection’s scope to include, for instance, voyage narratives or material usually adduced in a study of Wisdom Christology would have made the collection unwieldy.
